I bet Eugene is the one of the uniquest place in the United States. Well, a lot of people might be disagree with this, especially for the people from urban areas, like Tokyo. I was one of them. I was. I am from Tokyo, Japan, and I was afraid if I could survive here with nothing for the first few months.
The thought disappeared after I could meet many unique (strange) people who knows how to enjoy their lives.
One day, I was walking in downtown. “Excuse me, Miss. You drop something” said middle- age homeless person. Of course I looked back, but there was nothing. I was confused, and a little embarrassed because I was looking for something I could not find.
“You dropped your smile” the man told it with his big smile. Oh„ when I realized, I was also smiling. Then, I figured out before he talked to me, I might not look happy or fine.
It sounds sketchy, but isn’t it funny? didn’t this story make you chuckle?
He is a homeless. He does not have enough money to eat everyday. If I were in his situation, I must be depressed and give up any future. You?
But he does not forget smiling. The smile makes others smile. I am sure the man has made a lot of people smile.
I just wanted to write and let you know this story to keep this in my memory.
I made this audio slide show for my class project Fall 2011. This is the audio slide show for Material Exchange Center for Community Arts in Eugene, Ore. This video was selected as one of the five best works among 200 people.
Please watch this under HD quality.
